Located 60km from NJP and known for its elephant population, Chapramari is a forest in Dooars Region. Gorumara National Park home of the famous Asiatic one horned Rhino is close by Chapramari Forest and it is said that it is the continuation of the Gorumara National Park, the glorious sight of River Murti dividing these two forests is truly a marvelous scene to be seen were the North East side of the river is Chapramari Forest whereas at the South West lies Gorumara National Park. Chapramari is said to derive its name from 'Chapra' which means variety of small fish and 'Mari' means abundant.
Chapramari is relatively small compared to other forest in Dooars but is said to be the oldest forest reserve in West Bengal. It was declared as the forest reserve back in 1895 and got crowned by the title Wildlife Sanctuary in 1998. In the recent past year Chapramari has begin to attract many tourist because of its vast number of flora and fauna known for is elephant population the sighting of Bison which is commonly known as Gaur is not an uncommon scene. Unlike in Gorumara National Park you cannot spot Royal Bengal of tiger but you can spot deer, boar and if lucky enough you may even get the glimpse of leopard found marauding in Dooars which was captured in 2009 and released into Chapramari. It is also a popular place with bird watchers with Green Magpie, Indian Tree pie, Thrush, Scarlet Minivet, Hill Mayna, White Breasted Kingfisher, Hornbill, Large Grey Headed Fishing Eagle, Adjutant Stork etc. the most common water birds are the large and little Cormorant, Darter & Egret. Migratory birds include the Brahminy and Teals. Apart from the wildlife and avifauna found in Chapramari the visitors are lured towards it by the different variety of orchid found here like orchids belonging to the genus Acampe, Bulbophyllum, Chiloschista, Cymbidium, Dendrobium, Eria, Gastrochilus, Luisia, Oberonia etc. are very common. They can be seen in full bloom in different months throughout the year and fill the forest with its alluring fragrance.
