Lava is a small hamlet situated 34km east of the town of Kalimpong through Algarah in Darjeeling District. At an altitude of 2138mt, Lava is one of the few places in West Bengal to receive snow in winter. Travelers are lured towards this picturesque hamlet Lava for its proximity to the Neora Valley National Park and its beautiful view of the Jelep La and Reche La passes. Surrounded by the virgin alpine forest and pictorial view of the adjacent valley, Lava is a quaint village which is sparsely populated making it an ideal place for a weekend far from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Lava is the base and the gateway for the famous Neora Valley National Park and surrounded by dense forest of coniferous trees. The verdant forests surrounding this quaint hamlet are a popular spot for picnicking, trekking and bird-watching. The journey towards this serene place is an astounding experience in itself. Traveling through the scenic view of changing vegetation from tropical deciduous to the wet alpine trees of fir, pine and birch can leave any nature lover spell bound traveling to Lava. Apart from its proximity to the Neora Valley National Park Lava is also known for its leaches. During the rainy season vegetation the place remains covered with leaches. But if the travelers are not too fond of these insect they can try spotting some exotic bird since Lava is considered as the birding paradise. The best spot around Lava for birding is in the Rachet Reserve Forest, Rang bang Valley, Upper Rishi Valley, and Neora Valley, providing good birding treks. Hill Partridge, Kalij Pheasant, Darjeeling Woodpecker, Great Barbet, Golden Throated Barbet, Drongo Cuckoo, Tawny Owl, Eurasian Sparrow hawk, Black Eagle, Common Kestrel, Common Green Magpie, Grey Tree pie are some important species found in the region. Trekking through the Neora Valley National Park is another activity which has attracted travelers towards Lava. And for the inquisitive travelers there is a nature interpretation center in the village where they can learn more about the flora and fauna of Neora Valley National Park. The beauty of Lava can only be relished by the nature lovers.
